The death toll of the Aceh earthquake which registered 6.2 on the Richter scale continued to rise and as at noon today Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported 30 people were killed while 12 more were reported missing.

The number of injured victims rose to 275 and they were being treated at the district hospital as as well as the local community health centres.

BNPB spokesman, Sutopu Purwo Nugroho said 18 of the victims were killed in Aceh Tengah district while 12 were reported missing from the same district and in Bener Meriah, 12 perished.

"Earthquake emergency rescue continued at Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah. The main focus on the third day is search and rescue work and evacuating victims to safer grounds," he said here on Thursday.

All the dead victims have been identified and most of them were children and senior citizens who were buried under building debris.

The earthquake at 2.37pm on Tuesday local time had its epicentre 35km southwest of Bener Meriah and was followed by two aftershocks at the same place at night recording magnitudes of 5.5 and 5.3 on the Richter scale.

Since the earthquake on Tuesday evening up to last night, BNPB said there were 16 more aftershocks in Bener Mariah area.
