All of the 38 Australians who died when Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was downed in eastern Ukraine have now been formally identified, the Australian government said citing Dutch authorities.

A joint statement from Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop said the government's determination to bring the perpetrators to justice was undiminished.

"The successful recovery, identification and repatriation of the victims has been a painstaking and meticulous process," the statement said.

"It has been a tremendously difficult period for the families and for all Australians.

"After such a long wait, we can now be assured that the Australian victims have been accorded the dignity and respect they deserve."

Dutch authorities say a total of 292 of the people on board Flight MH17 have now been positively identified.

The Malaysia Airlines plane went down on July 17, killing all 298 people on board. More than two-thirds of those on board were Dutch.

The wreckage of the plane recovered from the crash site will be reassembled for an investigation at a military base in the Netherlands.
