CAIRO: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim departed from Cairo on Sunday evening for Riyadh to join the Arab-Islamic Summit, where leaders are expected to address escalating violence in Gaza and the broader Middle East.

Anwar’s flight left Cairo International Airport at 7:17 p.m. local time, briefly pausing his official visit to Egypt, scheduled from November 9 to 12.

Before departing, Anwar announced that he would carry forward the mandate of the Malaysian people and address the ongoing violence and atrocities by the Zionist Israeli regime against the Palestinians and Lebanese people.

He expressed hope that leaders at the summit could reach a consensus on addressing the Gaza crisis.

"I, along with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, will travel to Riyadh to discuss the latest developments in Gaza and Palestine,” Anwar said.

Anwar also expressed gratitude to President Sisi and the Egyptian government for their role in facilitating Malaysia’s humanitarian response and aid delivery in Gaza.

"Thank you for the support in dispatching two military aircraft to Rafah to transport Palestinian patients, who will be treated at military hospitals in Malaysia,” Anwar added.

Following the one-day summit in Riyadh, Anwar will to return to Cairo to resume his official engagements in Egypt on November 12.
