HER speech to a court on Wednesday had the effect of a bombshell being dropped on social networks. Britney Spears was finally able to make a statement to a judge to ask for an end to her guardianship, currently managed by her father.
A highly anticipated, emotional event that has upset web users and stars alike. Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Khloé Kardashian are among the many famous and not so famous individuals posting their support for the singer in distress by using the hashtag "Free Britney."
For years now, the hashtag "#FreeBritney" is widely used by fans of the iconic 2000s singer to denounce the tutelage that Britney Spears has suffered under for 13 years. This June 23, the artist behind the global hit "Baby One More Time" detailed the various aspects of her life controlled by those managing her conservatorship and in particular by her father, Jamie Spears. The revelations have shocked internet users across social networks.
"Traumatized," "in shock," "depressed," Britney Spears described the state of her mental health, deeply disturbed by factors beyond her control. The mother of one even revealed that she is not allowed to get pregnant or get married. Even worse, the star said she was being forced to have an IUD as a contraceptive.
So many details that the singer wanted to make public and that have caused multiple reactions on social networks. The hashtag "#FreeBritney" was still trending on Twitter on June 24.
And among the many reactions calling for a change in Spears' situation are those of several stars, including one of the singer's ex-boyfriends, Justin Timberlake who called for support of the artist while unequivocally declaring that "no woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body."
Singer Halsey, who is currently pregnant with her first child, denounced the stranglehold exercised over Britney Spears' contraceptive situation: "Additionally, f**k anyone who thinks they have the authority as an institution or an individual to control a person's reproductive health. #FreeBritney."
Diva Mariah Carey and reality TV star Khloé Kardashian urged the singer to "stay strong" while internationally respected fashion designer Vera Wang simply had "no words."
Other celebrities such as Jesse Tyler Ferguson ("Modern Family"), singers Brandy and Tinashe, and actress Rose McGowan have also spoken out on social networks in support of Britney Spears.
