Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman today sought assurance from the Myanmar government to help aid in tackling the humanitarian crisis involving Rohingya migrants.

He also stressed the importance of Myanmar in identifying and solving the main issue of the problem and resolving it.

This was said during a bilateral meeting held between Anifah Aman and the Myanmar Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin at Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Both countries had discussed immediate steps needed to be taken in resolving the crisis involving 7,000 immigrants from Myanmar and Bangladesh.

These immigrants are currently in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.

Anifah had said that the most pressing issue to be handled at the time being is for Malaysia, Indonesia,
Thailand and Myanmar to find a ways of aiding the migrants.

“Malaysia as the 2015 ASEAN chairman and ASEAN witits theme people-centred, need to unite in playing the main role of identifying this crisis,” said Anifah during the meeting.

Maung Lwin meanwhile also informed that the government of Myanmar are concerned over the development in the Rakhine State.

He added that, Myanmar is ready to provide its full cooperation to Malaysia in solving the conflict in Rakhine and the humanitarian crisis in the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea.
