Sriwijaya air plane loses contact shortly after Jakarta takeoff

JAKARTA: A Sriwijaya Air commercial plane has gone missing shortly after taking off from the Soekarno Hatta Airport, Jakarta, en route to Pontianak.
According to a Transport Ministry's spokesperson, the commercial plane took off at 2.36 pm (West Indonesia time), and scheduled to arrive in Pontianak, at 4.15pm (West Indonesia time).
"The aircraft's last contact with the control tower was at 2.40 pm, before disappearing," said the spokesperson via WhatsApp.
Detailed information on the number of passengers and crew members on board are yet to be made available.
Local media quoted local residents who claimed to have seen a plane crash in the waters of the Seribu (Thousand) Islands, Jakarta.
