Thailand’s government has announced that the country’s election will go on as scheduled on February 2. Confirmed by the country’s interim Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawat the decision was achieved after a meeting between Yingluck and the Election Commissioner, Somchai Srisutthiyakorn.
Yingluck and Somchai had earlier held a meeting to discuss the possibility of the election to be postponed. It was also earlier reported that Somchai had espressed his view that the election should be postponed following concerns of a possible outbreak of violence during polling day.
This matter was also supported by Opposition leader who is also former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejajiva.
A court had last week ruled that the election could only be postponed by mutual agreement between the Prime Minister and the Election Commission.
According to political analyst Chris Baker, the country’s economy is facing an uncertainty following the of current political unrest.
