An Indonesian domestic passenger aircraft carrying 54 people lost contact with air traffic control on Sunday in the remote eastern Papua region.

Bad weather hampered efforts Monday to reach debris in remote eastern Indonesian mountains believed to be from the plane.

Head of Indonesia's search and rescue agency Bambang Soelistyo said search efforts would resume Tuesday.

Let us see what we know so far:

1. The plane was carrying 54 passengers; 44 of them adults, two children, three toddlers and five crew members.

2. The aircraft was flying between Jayapura's Sentani Airport and Oksibil, due south of Jayapura before it went 'missing'. The journey should have taken only 50 minutes.

3. The reason for the 'disappearance' was believed to be caused by bad weather conditions.

4. The plane was reported to have lost contact with traffic air controller at 2.55pm, just 33 minutes after it took off.

5. The 25-year-old plane was not equipped with an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which made the tracking of the aircraft difficult.

6. Search and rescue mission operation has been suspended because it was getting dark and visibility was limited, and will resume Monday morning.

7. Information from the locals revealed that they heard the sound of an aircraft flying at low altitude at the mountainous region in Papua. Authorities are currently investigating the matter.
