Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. or Joe Biden, 77, was declared president-elect of the United States after polls closed while Kamala Harris will make history as the first woman to serve as vice president.

Biden is set to be inaugurated as  20 January 2021. He will be the 46th president of the United States.

Here are five facts about Biden:

1. He struggled with a stutter throughout his life. Biden had said that got on top of his stutter by chanting poetry in front of a mirror. He also worked with the Department of Speech Pathology while studying law at Syracuse University to help overcome his speech impediment. Biden had credited his mother for not letting his stutter define him.

2. Biden briefly worked as an attorney before turning to politics. He was elected as a Senator when he was 29-years-old. He became the fifth-youngest U.S. senator in history as well as Delaware's longest-serving senator.

3. The 2020 election was Biden’s third bid for the White House. Biden’s first presidential campaign was in 1988. However, he withdrew from the race after admitting to plagiarism. He was also accused of exaggeration his academic record. In 2008, Biden made a second run at the position but his presidential campaign never gained momentum. Barack Obama selected him as his running mate. Biden went on to serve two terms as the 47th vice president of the U.S.

4. Biden does not drink alcohol because of alcoholism in his family. "There are enough alcoholics in my family," he said in 2008 as to why he doesn't drink at all.

5. The Biden family has suffered a great deal of tragedy. In December 1972, Biden’s wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. His two sons, Hunter and Beau, were critically injured. In 2001, Beau died from brain cancer.
