Obama's absence will not jeopardise Apec summit
The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders Summit will not be jeopardised with the absence of United States President Barack Obama who is unable to attend the forum due to a crisis back home.
Host, Indonesia, however, is determined to maintain the momentum at the summit and Obama's decision not to attend the forum will not in any way affect ties between Jakarta and Washington, said Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
"We (Indonesia) understand his predicament and Obama has chosen to focus on issues at home due to the shutdown of US government operations," he said.
However, he was happy that Secretary of State John Kerry was representing the United States at this year's summit.
Meanwhile, speaking at a separate press conference, Kerry said the United States' commitment towards Asia would not fizzle out although Obama was unable to attend the Apec Leaders Summit.
"None of what is happening in Washington diminishes one iota of our commitment to our partners in Asia," he added.
