Umno Youth Chief Khairy Jamaluddin said that staying out of the upcoming general election does not necessary mean that he is letting down his supporters.

"There are many ways to serve even without contesting. I will still be in the Malaysian political arena one way or another," said Khairy in a report by The Malay Mail published today.

On April 4, Khairy said on his Facebook fan page that he preferred not to contest in the general election and had informed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of his decision.

"As far as the BN in Rembau is concerned, they want me to run again. I have the support of my division chief, who is also the menteri besar.

"But, ultimately, it is up to the PM. My personal preference is well known, but I will abide by the decision made by my boss," he added.

He also denied that he was sidelined by Najib's administration and said that Najib had asked him to focus on Umno Youth and the outset. He believed that there are other factors that have prevented his entry into the government.

"It has nothing to do with the Prime Minister's relationship with me, which is good. He has asked me to lead a few initiatives and values my contribution. I am one hundred percent supportive of him.

"But we both agreed that we shouldn't unnecessarily open up another front, so to speak, by having me in the government," said the Rembau MP, who won with 5,746 majority during the previous general election against PKR's Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

Khairy, 37, studied in Oxford University, United Kingdom in 1998 and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
