5.3-magnitude earthquake jolts southwest China

The tremor shook Yongshan at 6:40 am local time with a 13 km deep epicentre in Xiluodu township where the country's second largest hydropower station is situated.

Li Fei, spokesman for the province's earthquake administration, said reports have been received of house collapse, road cave-ins and rocks rolling down from mountains in Yongshan County, Yunnan province.

The quake has left three people with slight injuries.

A number of residents said they were awakened from their sleep by the tremor.

"We strongly felt the quake, but it did not last long," said a local resident in the county seat.

Staffers from the Yunnan Civil Affairs Department have been dispatched to the affected area.At least three people were slightly injured after a 5.3-magnitude quake jolted a town in southwest China early Saturday, China's Xinhua news agency reported.
