Capsized ferry: 52 confirmed dead, 250 still missing

The number of victims who died from a shipwreck off the South Korea coast on Wednesday has risen to 52 people, according to a report by The Guardian. Entering the fourth day of rescue operations, security forces managed to find all 52 bodies that were still in the Sewol ferry. However, around 250 people are still missing, mostly high school students on a school trip. The incident has sparked outrage among parents. According to initial reports, divers initially failed to enter the ferry which had sunk due to strong waves and limited visibility. 13 bodies were found trapped inside the ferry, while the other six were found floating, the coast guard officials said. The ferry was carrying 459 passengers and crew and was heading towards Jeju Island for a school trip. Almost all the passengers were high school students. It was reported that the ferry, weighing 6,825 tons, had sunk in the early hours of Wednesday after sending a emergency signal at 09:00 (0000 GMT). South Korean police early yesterday morning arrested the captain and two crew members of the ferry. Lee Joon Seok, 68, will face five counts, including negligence while on duty and violation of maritime law.
