Indonesian DPD speaker Irman Gusman detained in corruption-related case

Indonesia's Regional Representative Council (DPD) has confirmed that its Speaker, Irman Gusman, has been detained by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to facilitate investigations into a corruption case.

However, DPD Deputy Speaker Faoruk Muhammad was quoted by the online media as saying the case was not connected to the functions and powers of the DPD.

Together with the People's Representative Council, the DPD makes up the Indonesian national legislative body, the People's Consultative Assembly.

Meanwhile at a press conference today, KPK head, Agus Rahardjo said Irman was detained on Saturday, to shed light on a case related to the quota of imported sugar given to a company in West Sumatera.

A married couple leaving the politician's house was also detained by the KPK.

Agus said the KPK also seized a parcel containing cash amounting to Rp100 million (about RM30,000) in the politician's house. The money was believed to have been given by the couple as incentive to obtain help in getting the sugar quota.

Meanwhile, Indonesian President Joko Widodo was quoted as saying he was leaving the case totally with the KPK and would respect any action it took.
