New aging policy for LGBTI group in Australia
The Australian government has launched its first national ageing and aged care strategy for the LGBTI community, said Minister for Ageing Mark Butler.
The strategy commits to providing high quality, culturally appropriate aged care for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex community and other sexuality groups, Xinhua news agency reported.
"We are predicting a large increase in demand for aged care by this group and we need to be in a position to respond to their needs. Ultimately it's about recognising difference and ensuring equality for all Australians," Butler said.
The strategy will help shape the roll-out of the government's 3.7 billion (US$3.9 billion) aged care reforms.
Five principles are embedded in the strategy to help aged care providers incorporate inclusive practices within their organisations: inclusion, empowerment, access and equity, quality and capacity building.
The strategy was recommended by the Productivity Commission and groups such as ACON Health, National LGBTI Health Alliance and GLBTI Retirement Association.
