THE UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 clearly states that Taiwan is a part of China and the one-China principle brooks no challenge, said multiple UN representatives on Monday at a meeting commemorating the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's Restoration to China and the authority of the historic resolution.

AI Brief
  • UN Resolution 2758 (1971) officially recognized the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representative of China at the UN, replacing Taiwan's representatives.
  • Global support for one-China principle was reaffirmed by multiple countries, emphasising that Taiwan is part of China and opposing any secession efforts.
  • Resolution's authority is undisputed and seen as a cornerstone of international order post-WWII, with attempts to challenge it widely condemned.

On October 25, 1971, at the 26th session of the UN General Assembly, Resolution 2758 was adopted with an overwhelming majority, which "decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its Government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations, and to expel forthwith the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek from the place where they unlawfully occupy at the United Nations and in all the organizations related to it."
The resolution resolved once and for all the question of the representation of the whole of China, including Taiwan, in the UN, as a political, legal and procedural issue.
The resolution brooks no challenge to its legitimacy, validity, and authority.
"On this major matter of principle, there is no room for ambiguity. China calls on all countries to firmly uphold the one-China principle, oppose any form of 'Taiwan secession', and support the Chinese government in achieving national reunification," said Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN.
"Any attempt to question the one-China principle will result in very severe consequences in international relations and that is why it is important to reaffirm that one-China principle has been approved by Resolution 2758 and there is no question of going back on that," said Munir Akram, Pakistan's former permanent representative to the United Nations.
Jaime Hermida Castillo, permanent representative of republic of Nicaragua to the UN, said the false statement by very few Western countries exposed their hegemonic pretension and egoistic agenda.
"You know, the very, very few Western countries that utter those false statements. You know, that hypocrisy that they express is a reflection of their hegemonic pretension and their egoistic agenda. There is only one China. It is clear," he said.
Dmitry S. Chumakov, deputy permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, said Resolution 2758 is significant in its important role in the post-WW II international order.
"Russia continues to believe that this resolution is important as an element of World War II legacy and the decisions and the system of international world order," he said.
Fu said the one-China principle receives wide international supports and any attempt to distort it is destined to fail.
"The statements made at this meeting demonstrate that the one-China principle receives broad support in the international community and any attempt to distort it is destined to fail," he said.
