Stiffer fines for vehicle engine idling in Singapore

Singapore is enforcing a stricter fine for motorists caught leaving their vehicle engines idling.

The National Environment Agency will increase the penalty to S$100 (RM291.12) from the current $70 (RM203.78).

According to Channel News Asia, it is an offence in Singapore to leave their vehicle’s engine running under local laws unless the reason is traffic conditions.

Among the vehicles exempted from the law are taxis and buses waiting in queue at their designated stops or police vehicles or ambulance during emergency purposes.

A total of 5,100 motorists were caught for the offence last year.

This is an increase from 3,200 in 2013 and 3,800 in 2014.
