16,449 patients waiting for new organs
Malaysia has one of the highest number of people suffering from kidney disease in the world.
A total of 16,449 patients are still on the waiting list to undergo kidney transplant.
However, only 212 kidneys were donated up until January. The rest will still have to wait for new organs.
Ismail Osman, 60, who has been undergoing dialysis treatment for the past 10 years, said his chances of receiving a new organ is low considering the waiting process and his age.
Another patient, who wished to be known as Rajamani, 69, is also experiencing a similar fate, and has been depending on the dialysis machine for the last five years.
Kidney failure is often caused by diabetes and high blood pressure.
Half of the patients can recover through organ transplantation, however the amount of donors are low.
“Some donors have given permission for their organs to be donated. However, family members would put a stop for emotional reasons or not wanting their loved ones to be operated,” said consultant nephrologist Dr. Foo Siu Mei.
With the rising number of those suffering from kidney failure, there should be more awareness on the importance of organ donation.
Most have to depend on the dialysis machine to clean their kidneys. This certainly affect their quality of life as they have to go to the dialysis centre three times a week and spending an average of four to five hours during each session.
Therefore, organ transplant will not only increase one’s quality of life but it will prolong their longevity as well.
