Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man urged the amendments on laws related to ketum addiction to be immediately executed to strengthen its implementation.

He said, based on his observation, police were incapable of fully handling the issue as the laws implemented did not correspond with implementation measures taken.

"Police actions are restricted due to shortcomings in the provisions of the law which do not prohibit the cultivation of ketum but its sales instead. Thus, there need to be a mechanism such as laws on ketum which are in line with the aim of police to ensure full enforcement on such offences," he told reporters here today.

Azlan said the state government viewed the issue of ketum abuse seriously as it was among problems faced in Perlis that need to be eradicated, apart from smuggling and other crimes.

"I am confident that the police force are constantly committed in carrying out their duties in combating crime as well as reducing crime rate," he added.

Earlier, Azlan handed out contributions to 15 policemen from the Perlis police contingent headquarters (IPK) who suffered from chronic illnesses in conjunction with the 210th Police Day celebration.
