UMNO Youth leader Khairy Jamaluddin said,Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is contradicting himself and is confused over the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the water issue.
Khairy said Anwar had mentioned that the Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has referred all matters pertaining to the agreement to Anwar but he later said that the water deal was not finalised yet.
“If the Selangor MB has referred everything with Anwar, then why should he say the agreement is not finalised? What is Anwar's agenda? Is he not going to pursue this deal if he seizes the MB position? What is his alternative suggestion?” Khairy asked in a statement issued on his Facebook page.
With the agreement signed between the Selangor state government and the Federal government, the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (LRAL2) can be built immediately which guarantees a long term water supply in Klang Valley. With LRAL2, the reserve margin too will go up to 12.4% in 2017 compared to the current level, 1%.
Khairy, who is also the Minister of Youth & Sports said the question of the one-sided agreement also does not arise as the Federal Government had also received the Selangor Government’s approval for the LRAL2 construction.
Under the MoU, the Selangor state government would receive RM2 billion grant from the Federal government to assist in the acquisition of the water concession.
“This clearly showed that the agreement is made in a win-win spirit where the people become the biggest winner with sufficient water supply,”Khairy said.
“For those who are fussing about this agreement, they should take the Selangor MB as an example who choose to cooperate with the Barisan Nasional for the benefit of the people,” Khairy added.
He also congratulated Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Abdul Khalid for putting aside their political differences to solve the water problem, which has been plaguing the people of Klang Valley.
He believed that this is what the people have been waiting for; the federalism spirit to be able to overcome party politics and come to an agreement in the interest of the people.
“Though there are those, especially from PR who are disputing the agreement. Their motive is not for the betterment of the people but rather for the internal politics of PKR,” he said.
The MoU signed last week was on the restructuring of the state's water supply industry which has dragged on for five years.
The Federal government was represented by Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili while the state government by Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim at the signing ceremony held at the Perdana Putra Complex.
The ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa.
