Apple brings the iPhone to in-car displays through CarPlay

At the Geneva Motor Show, Apple and partnering carmakers will demonstrate CarPlay, a version of iOS designed specifically for use within a vehicle. Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will be the first to show off the new system.
CarPlay allows drivers to connect their iPhone to a dashboard display screen, which presents a simplified, lighter version of the smartphone's interface, offering access to all of its apps and content.
The system permits users to make calls, use the Maps function or select music through touchscreen controls or through voice commands to Siri.
Apple is launching CarPlay as an alternative to Mirrorlink, the technology that reproduces the interface and features of Android or Windows Phone devices on in-car touchscreen displays.
While Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will demonstrate Apple's new technology in Geneva, other car manufacturers are expected to include CarPlay in their vehicles in the near future. BMW, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota have all announced their intention to include the system in forthcoming cars.
Previously known as "iOS in the car," the CarPlay project was first presented by Apple in 2013. CarPlay is compatible with all iPhone models equipped with a Lightning port (iPhone 5, 5c and 5s) and will be built into new cars from Apple's partners from 2014.
The 84th Geneva Motor Show takes place from March 6 to 16 at Palexpo in Geneva.
