According to the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2023 and the University of Oxford, Astro AWANI ranked first with 64 percent followed by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) with a score of 63 percent, while four other news brands sharing the third spot with 60 percent are Malaysiakini, Berita Harian, TV3 and TV9.
Astro Awani also secured third place for weekly offline reach in the categories of television, radio, and print media. For weekly online reach, Astro Awani remained in second place.
According to the report, the consumption of traditional media sources, such as television news and print, has been on a decline for several years, with the weekly usage of print newspapers having decreased by half since 2017.
'A continuous development with potential positive impact is the numerous open discussions held between the government and media professionals, academics, and civil society regarding the formation of a self-regulated Malaysian Media Council to promote, protect, and uphold media freedom in Malaysia", the findings state.
