UMNO Youth vice president Khairul Azwan Harun today insisted that the police report he lodged last week was made to represent UMNO Youth.
This was despite UMNO Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Najib Razak himself having said the report, which alleged a conspiracy to topple the Prime Minister, was made on Khairul Azwan's personal capacity.
At a media conference today, Khairul Azwan, also known as Azwan Bro, said he lodged the report because "we had a basis" to believe that such a conspiracy existed.
But when reporters asked what that "basis" was, and if "we" represented UMNO Youth, he replied, "Refer to my police report."
When asked about Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar's statement that the report was lodged based his assumptions, and that the police would not proceed with an investigation, Khairul Azwan likened the move to a "Mexican standoff".
A Mexican standoff is a stalemate or impasse; a confrontation that neither side can win.
"I lodged the police report because I have a basis to believe that there was a conspiracy to topple Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. I took the simple approach – exercising my right as a Malaysian to ask assistance from the police when I have doubts about something.
"However, I've been made to understand that the police will not proceed with an investigation, and that no action will be taken against me.
"A Mexican standoff," he said.
When asked if he regretted lodging the report, or if he was going to apologise to anyone, he said: "Never."
"What's important is, we have carried out our responsibility in defending the leadership of the Prime Minister. An attack on the Prime Minister is an attack on UMNO and Barisan Nasional. And when there is an attack on UMNO and BN, we (UMNO Youth) will rise and retaliate," Khairul Azwan said.
But when asked to elaborate on what form of "attack" he meant, again he said: "Refer to my police report."
On July 26, Khairul Azwan claimed to have evidence on the involvement of former Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz, former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed and former attorney-general Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail in a plot to overthrow the Malaysian Government and the Prime Minister.
In a report lodged at the Dang Wangi police station, he also accused them of deliberately falsifying, distorting and disseminating confidential information to agencies in the United States.
But Khalid said when the police recorded his statement, Khairul Azwan could not submit any evidence to support what he stated in the police report.
