Former Rembau PKR chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin, opposition activists Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Muhammad Safwan Anang@Talib and seven others were fined a total of RM6,000 each by the Sessions Court here today for participating in an illegal assembly and rioting at Jalan Parlimen here three years ago.

Judge Abdul Rashid Daud imposed the fine after finding them guilty of the charges.

They were fined RM2,000 each, in default three months' jail, for participating in the assembly with intention to cause public nuisance at Jalan Parlimen between 9.15 am and 11.25 am on June 24, 2013.

The charge, under Section 143 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to six months, or fine, or both, upon conviction.

On the charge for rioting, under Section 143 of the Penal Code, they were fined RM4,000 each, in default six months' jail.

The offence, which carries an imprisonment for up to two years or fine or both, if found guilty, was committed at a road junction leading to the Parliament building at 11.25 am on the same day.

Besides Badrul Hisham or better known as Chegubard, 38; Adam Adli, 27; and Muhammad Safwan, 26, who is executive director of Lensa Anak Muda Malaysia (Lensa), the seven others are Norazimah Mohamad Nor, Ahmad Shauqie Abdul Aziz, Ahmad Syukri Che Ab Razab, Lim Sue Pei, Edy Noor Reduan, Md Sani Md Shah and Ekhsan Bukharee Badarul Hisham.

They had earlier requested for a stay of paying the fine, but it was dismissed by the court.

The court also ordered five other people to pay a fine of RM2,000 each, in default three months' jail for participating in the illegal assembly.

They are Muhammad Aiman Hakim Zainal, Annie Ooi Siew Lan, Mah Chee Hoe, Tong Chan Sang and Abdullah Hassan.

Lawyers Mohd Radzlan Jalaludin, Haijan Omar and G. Sivamalar represented all the 15 accused, while the prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim.
