Don't neglect OKU child, let Lolanopita's case be a lesson for all

Parents with problems taking care of their disabled (OKU) children can send them to the Social Welfare Department (JKM), Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said.

She said it was better to put their children under the JKM's custody than neglecting them, as child neglect was an offence under the Child Act 2001.

"OKU children sent to the JKM will be placed at an institution most suitable for them to ensure that they will receive appropriate treatment and rehabilitation.

"As OKU, they also have their rights and we cannot deny their rights," she told reporters after officiating the closing of 'Nilai U - NIEW Future Leaders Camp 2014' programme here Monday.

Rohani was commenting on the Seremban Sessions Court's decision which sentenced Lolanopita Sadi, 40, to four months' jail and a fine of RM10,000 for neglecting her disabled son, Muhammad Firdaus Dullah, 15.

She said Lolanopita's case should be a lesson for all.

The minister said during the counseling session with the JKM, Lolanopita personally wanted her son to be put under JKM's custody because she was satisfied with his mental and physical development.

After serving her time, and if she wants, she can take her son back, but on certain conditions, Rohani said, adding that parents with similar situation could also call Child Helpline 15999 for advice and guidance.
