KUALA LUMPUR:The people can still accept if the government intends to implement the Movement Control Order (MCO) to address the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, as it is in line with the practices of other countries, said Tan Sri Dr Rafidah Aziz.

Furthermore, the former Kuala Kangsar Member of Parliament explained, the practice of physical distancing, wearing face masks in public places, and sanitation operations have all become new norms in daily life.

However, Rafidah added, any attempt to declare an emergency on the excuse of controlling the transmission of COVID-19 is an action that is seen as very drastic.

"People can accept MCO, CMCO and so on, together with the world practice on keeping distance, use of face masks and sanitation because these are steps that need to be taken to prevent transmission. We have been through all this for seven months.

“But the declaration of emergency not only affects Parliament, and the democratic process…

“It seems like using bombs to eliminate rats in the attic of the house. The whole house will be destroyed,” she added in a post on her Facebook.

Rafidah said the government should not arbitrarily use the COVID-19 as an excuse to continue to find a way to cling to power.

"The people are tired and disgusted with the dirty politics and irresponsible attitude of some politicians.

"Now is the time to formulate a plan to reduce the impact of the pandemic, and it should involve all stakeholders," she added.

Rafidah said the government should start working for the people and the country, and no longer get carried away with the idea of declaring an emergency or the like.

If that is not possible, Rafidah said, it is better for the current government to resign immediately.
