Facebook page admin arrested for sedition

A man believed to be the admin for a parody Facebook page with the name “Persatuan Kongsi Gelap Melayu” has been arrest under the Sedition Act 1948.

Syafiq Abdul Wahid was arrested at his home at 3am and was taken to the Serdang police station.

According to his lawyer Michelle Yesudas, Syafiq will be remanded for three days.

"It was shocking and nobody was alerted. It is really a crackdown and abuse of the remand system. It is just Facebook postings, what can you get?" said Michelle when contacted by Astro AWANI.

She also said that the authorities did not specify which posting from the “Persatuan Kongsi Gelap Melayu” Facebook page was deemed seditious.

As Syafiq's lawyer, Michelle will be present during the remand period, which will end on Sunday morning.

“However, the investigating officer told me that the police would seek to extend the remand on Sunday,” she said.

The Facebook page has received 5,503 Likes as at 5.05pm.

Earlier today, student activist Adam Adli Abd Halim was found guilty at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for a speech containing seditious slurs in Kuala Lumpur in May, 2013.

He was sentenced to a year’s jail but his defense team have obtained a stay order on the basis that they will be appealing against the sentence and conviction.
