A father and son were both sentenced to jail on Tuesday by the High Court for promoting terrorism.

The father, Murad Halimmuddin Hassan 49 was sentenced to 18 years while his son, Abu Daud Murad Halimmuddin, 25 was given 12 years of prison.

They claimed trial on April 30 to a charge of promoting an act of violence in Malaysia, a crime under Section 130G(a) and Section 120(b)(1) of the Penal Code.

Six people, including these two, were detained in April for allegedly promoting terrorism in the country.

They are accused to be part of the 17 who were detained on Apr 5 after police foiled their plans to kidnap a VVIP and attack pubs and discos.

Two of the accused are members of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM).

It was earlier reported that Murad Halimuddin was a senior member of a Malaysia militant group which was involved in armed conflicts in Afghanistan, Sulawesi and Syria.
