Fatwa Council studies use of vape

The National Fatwa Council is studying the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vape, in connection with various aspects before deciding on the rule of its usage for Muslims.

National Fatwa Council chairman Prof Emeritus Tan Sri Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said the council's research fellows, along with health care, economic and environmental experts were currently conducting a study on the use of the vape.

"Research findings will then be presented to the National Fatwa Council's committee members and the muftis of each state, and only then, a decision will be made," he told Bernama here today.

He said this when asked to comment on the Cabinet's decision today, not to ban the use of e-cigarettes.

Earlier today, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Cabinet decided not to ban the use of e-cigarettes.

Elaborating, Abdul Shukor said the decision on whether the use of vape was illegal or otherwise would only be decided upon after several review processes were carried out.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam in a statement here today, said the Cabinet fully recognised the need for greater public health education into the harmful effects of vaping and the need for stringent regulation.

He said the ministry would immediately implement both measures, adding that the success of the above measures and advent of further evidence would decide if there was a need to ban it in the future.
