Fire razes 14 houses in Sandakan water village

14 houses in a water village were gutted by fire in Bandar Nam Tung, Jalan Leila near here but no casualties were reported.

Quick action by the fire and rescue personnel to prevent the fire from spreading saved several other houses at the water village in the Batu Sapi area, which is inhabited by the Chinese community and used as a harbour by fishing trawlers.

Sandakan Fire and Rescue zone chief Anddre Andrew said 34 personnel equipped with two engines rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 7.40 am.

They managed to extinguish the fire an hour later.

He said no casualties were reported in the incident and the department was still investigating the cause and estimated loss incurred.
