KUCHING: The situation of unexpected flooding in several areas in Hulu Baram, Miri is under control, according to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
Its director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the water in the affected areas had started to recede and no temporary evacuation centre (PPS) was opened.
He said JBPM assets such as helicopters had also been dispatched to the location to deliver food and other aid.
"Usually, we expect hot and dry conditions in September but what is happening now is the result of a change in the season that we did not expect.
"As for preparations in Sarawak, we are ready now or during the Northeast Monsoon season later," he told reporters after attending the JBPM and Community Solidarity programme here today.
The heavy rain in the Hulu Baram area since Sunday has resulted in flooding.
Commenting further, Khirudin said the flood situation in Hulu Baram is under control as a result of the cooperation of the fire department and the local community.
According to the report of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), the transition phase of the monsoon will start from mid-September until November. MetMalaysia also forecasts the monsoon season to start in November 2022 and will last till March 2023.
Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang are expected to experience heavy monsoon rains from November to December, while Johor, Sabah and Sarawak are expected to experience heavy monsoon rains from December 2022 to January 2023.
