The Government is considering splitting the BR1M (1Malaysia People's Aid) based on gender so that both the male and female of a family benefit from the scheme.

"Let's say if BR1M was RM600. We are considering giving one RM300 in one envelop for men and another RM300 in another envelop for women,” said Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan told the Dewan Rakyat this morning.

Ahmad explained there were cases when the cash handouts were given to one particular member of the family and not shared with others.

"Sometimes we give it to men and it does not reach the women, so we are studying this idea," he said.
Ahmad also said that the government was still studying the RM3, 000 household income cap for eligibility of BR1M.

"We are studying the possibility of increasing the cap from 3,000 to 4,000 or 5, 000," he said.

Ahmad was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Nawawi Ahmad (BN-Langkawi) on whether the government will widen the bracket for those eligible to receive the monetary aid.

Earlier, to the question by Oscar Ling Chai Yew (DAP-Sibu) asking when the government will fulfill its promise to increase BR1M from RM500 to RM1, 200, Ahmad said it will be tabled during Budget 2014, which is expected in October.
