Hudud: Najib caught at the crossroads, afraid of losing component parties support - Mahfuz

PAS Information Chief, Datuk Mahfuz Omar said Najib is at a crossroad to show his support towards hudud or risk losing component parties within Barisan Nasional (BN).

“Najib is seen as restless and he is worried that party members will opt to exit from BN and will eventually lead to the downfall of UMNO.

“Why can’t he make a stand? Where is his firmness as a Prime Minister? Why afraid to state internal problems faced within BN?” said Mahfuz when contacted by Astro AWANI here on Friday.

Mahfuz was responding to BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s statement informing Najib’s intention to announce the party’s stand on the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan last Tuesday.

According to him, Najib has yet to keep to his words to express his stand and that he remains relatively quiet about this vital issue. And that his absence to address this matter has rightfully caused anxiety among the rakyat.

Tourism and Cultural Minister, Datuk Seri Nazri Mohamed Aziz on Friday had reportedly said that PAS should obtain two-thirds majority at the Parliament to the constitution to give jurisdiction to Syariah courts to hear criminal cases for the implementation of the hudud law.

He said criminal punishments such as murder, rape and thefts came under the civil courts and could not be tried in Syariah courts.

Cheras UMNO chief, Datuk Seri Syed Ali Alhabshee had reportedly cautioned MCA not to place any threats on UMNO over the hudud issue.

He stressed that hudud laws involve only Muslims and that UMNO will now bow to external pressure.
