Increasing the people's income is a vital step to counter the rising cost of living that is plaguing the people now, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Sunday.

He said besides taking action to lower the cost of living, the government should ensure greater economic growth for the country by attracting more investment and liberalising the country's economy in order to increase the people's income.

Thanking the government for adopting many measures to counter the issue, he said more initiatives must be taken, especially in reducing wastage and increasing accountability in the government itself, so that the people truly felt that the government was always with them in the matter.

"MCA is concerned about the rising cost of living in this country and will do whatever it takes to ease the burden of the people, especially the common man, effected by this," he told reporters, here.

Earlier, Liow, who is also the Melaka MCA chairman, chaired the Melaka MCA state liaison committee meeting, which was also attended by the two Melaka MCA deputy chairman, Datuk Gan Tian Loo and Datuk Koh Nai Kwong.

Liow said MCA would come up with many initiatives to counter the rising cost of living, especially among the Chinese, in the country.

He also said that he had taken charge of the Melaka MCA himself from January 2 to bring about a new momentum, especially in attracting more support from the Chinese in the state.

"Of course, this is a temporary post for me. I want to bring unity among the MCA members to new heights. After all of that is done, we will appoint a leader to replace me in the state," he said.

Former Melaka MCA chairman Gan was appointed as deputy chairman along with the current deputy chairman Koh.

Asked about the appointment of only 15 local councillors from the MCA compared to 18 before, Liow said he would meet with Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron next week to discuss the matter and other issues involving the MCA and the Chinese in the state.
