The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) takes issues related to the faith of Muslims seriously, including the threat of liberal movements that contradict the beliefs of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah, says its chairman Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi.

He said MAIS was also working with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), Selangor State Mufti Department and Selangor Syariah Prosecution Department to address and prevent the spread of beliefs and teachings that deviate from Islam.

"Therefore, the statement published by a local newspaper that the state's Islamic religious council was not doing anything in terms of curbing the spread of liberalism that contradicts the beliefs of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah, is inaccurate," he said in a statement yesterday.

The statement was issued in response to a Utusan Malaysia newspaper report today claiming that religious institutions and the Communications and Multimedia Commission was not taking any action in curbing the spread of liberal ideologies that contradict Islam.

Mohammed Khusrin said, in fact, the fatwa on liberalism and religious pluralism gazetted on July 31, 2014 also stated that any individual, organisation or institution that adheres to liberal ideologies and religious pluralism is misguided and deviates from Islamic teachings.

"MAIS and the Selangor State Mufti Department are also conducting awareness programmes on an ongoing basis relating to the fatwa among school students, officials at government departments and the public," he said, adding that social media platforms were also being continuously monitored.
