Malaysia agrees to bring in more Cambodian maids - Najib

Malaysia and Cambodia will continue to work together to enable more Cambodians to work in the country as domestic maids.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen made the agreement during their bilateral meeting in Putrajaya, Friday.

"Cambodia hoped that Malaysia would allow more Cambodians to work in the country, and we have accepted the offer, especially in the field of domestic maids," said Najib at a joint press conference with Hun Sen at Perdana Putra after the meeting.

He said Malaysia is also looking into investing in Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

“One of the things that the Cambodian Prime Minister wanted Malaysia to take note are investments in the agricultural sector especially the production and supply chain of rice,” said Najib.

He said Cambodia also hoped for Malaysia to provide assistance in halal food production and its certification.

Besides that, Najib said four Malaysian universities would be offering Cambodian citizens opportunities to pursue their Master's degree through the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP) on ASEAN scholarship.

"The programme will commence this September. Cambodia is the third largest participant under the MTCP and Malaysia is committed to provide places to study to the Cambodians," said Najib.

Malaysia and Cambodia will also work together in the tourism industry, as well as the MyCorps volunteer programme.
