Malaysian police nab suspect linked to assassination plot of Maldives president

Police has arrested a foreigner believed to be involved in the alleged assassination of Maldives president, Abdulla Yameen on Sept 28.

The Royal Malaysian Police said that the arrest was made on October 28 by the department's counter-terrorism unit.

The 47-year-old Maldivian national, who worked as the country’s investment ambassador was arrested at a condominium here along with four other individuals - two men and two women - aged between 28 and 38.

All the suspects were arrested under the Immigration Act and has been deported out of Malaysia to Maldives on October 30 to face charges by authorities in his native country.

The arrest of the suspects was based on the cooperation between the Royal Malaysian Police and Maldivian authorities.

Abdulla, 59, escaped unscathed in the heist which took place moments after his presidential boat, 'Finifenmaa' approached the capital, Male from Saudi Arabia.

The President, his wife and two aides were returning home after they performed their hajj pilgrimage.

His wife and two aides however, were injured. Maldives vice-president Ahmed Adheeb was arrested over the incident.
