National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) today claims that it is being targeted by Malaysian Airlines (MAS) in its mass retrenchment exercise because it was vocal in criticising the airline.

Nufam President Ismail Nasaruddin said this is clearly seen from the termination letters received by three of Nufam’s exco.

“I was informed by sources close to MAS that Nufam is targeted by MAS for being vocal in criticising the airline.

“MAS seems to take this personally. This shows MAS is unprofessional.

“If MAS feels the Exco is being a hindrance for them, they should discuss it with us,” he told Astro AWANI.

Ismail said, Nufam will raise the matter up to the Human Resources Ministry.

The national carrier's new CEO Christoph Mueller said today that MAS employees offer letters will be sent to some 14,000 employees, but 6,000 others would lose their jobs.

In March of last year flight MH370 disappeared with 239 passengers and crew aboard and remains missing. Four months later Flight MH17 was blown out of the sky, killing all 298 aboard, by a suspected ground-to-air missile over Ukraine.

A Malaysian state investment fund took the reeling airline over late last year, later tapping Mueller to take the helm. He is the company's first non-Malaysian CEO.

On Monday the airline said it had issued termination letters to all of its roughly 20,000 employees, followed by new contracts offered to 14,000 of them as it aims to slim down.

MAS Chief executive officer-designate Christoph Mueller said the 6,000 job losses were necessary as the company suffered from cost burdens 20 percent higher than those sustained by its rivals.
