MMEA will use infra red camera system to combat crimes

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) will use the Infra Red Camera System (IRCS) costing RM1.8 million to combat criminal activities on national waters.
MMEA director-general Datuk Ahmad Puzi Ab Kahar said the system mounted on KM Marlin could detect temperature, penetrate fog and darkness from two nautical miles (3.7km).
"Through this system, we can detect movement on boats to the extend of knowing whether the individuals are armed or not," he told reporters at the handing over of IRCS by Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) here, today.
The system, equipped with 150 mm lens, is the latest model with improved technology compared to older models installed on Japan Coast Guard boats.
Ahmad Puzi said the most modern system in its class would help enhance enforcement and search and rescue operations.
"In fact, we can record the visual to be used as evidence for prosecution in court if there is any criminal conduct," he added.
