Moderate earthquake strikes northern Indian Ocean

A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale, occurred at noon in the northern Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to the Meteorological Department.

It said in a statement that the epicentre of the quake was located 809km southwest of Great Nicobar, India, and 1,453km southwest of Langkawi, Kedah.

The quake did not pose any tsunami threat, it added.
