KUALA LUMPUR: The UMNO Special General Assembly today unanimously approved a motion to amend its constitution, which, among other things, allows party elections to be held no more than six months after a general election (GE).

UMNO secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan confirmed the matter via his Twitter page.

"The party's constitutional amendment was approved unanimously by the delegates in #Dewan Merdeka, #PWTC, #WTCKL on 15/5/2022. Alhamdulillah," he said in his latest tweet.

The motion for the amendment, which involves Clause 10.16, Clause 15.3 and Clause 18.2, was tabled by UMNO vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled, before 2,586 delegates who were present at the special meeting.

UMNO previously postponed party elections at its branches, divisions and the Supreme Council levels for 18 months after the 2018/2021 term ended on June 30 last year.

The 18-month period will end by the end of this year and UMNO elections must be held before Dec 30, 2022.


Based on the amendment document tabled, it provides for two proposed new clauses, including Clause 10.16.1 which states that the UMNO Supreme Council (MT) has the right to postpone elections at its branches, divisions and MT levels.

It states: "The postponement shall not be more than 18 months from the date of the election that should have been held, or not more than six months after a Parliamentary General Election (GE), whichever is later".

Clause 10.16.2 states that the date of the GE stated in Clause 10.16.1 means the voting date for the GE as stated in the writ issued under Section 12 of the Election Act 1958 or any law applicable for the same purpose.

Meanwhile, both Clauses 15.3 and 18.2 also provide for a similar postponement for the election of committees of the three wings - Wanita, Youth and Puteri - at the division and branch levels.

The UMNO special general assembly took place at Dewan Merdeka, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), which was followed by the party's 76th anniversary celebration and Aidilfitri gathering.

It was also attended by Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also UMNO vice-president.
