The Malaysian Council of Former Elected Representatives (Mubarak) is prepared to play the role of mediator to solve the standoff between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Mubarak president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman said the standoff should be resolved immediately so that it would not be used by the opposition to launch an attack on the federal government and UMNO.
"We (Mubarak) respect Tun Dr Mahathir's opinion on several issues, but the way he voiced it out (openly) was quite inappropriate.
"There are certain quarters (opposition) who are just waiting for this kind of opportunity to launch an attack on us (government)," he told reporters after attending the 14th annual general meeting of Penang Mubarak, Saturday.

The meeting was officially opened by Penang Umno Liaison Body deputy chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, who is also Kepala Batas Member of Parliament.
Meanwhile, Reezal Merican said all quarters should give room to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC to carry out investigation on all allegations made concerning 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
He said it was hoped that PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed would expedite the investigation without waiting for the Auditor-General's decision because the PAC had the power to call all involved to clarify the issues, including those raised by Tun Dr Mahathir.
"We respect all opinions, but let's just give the PAC the space to carry out their investigations," he said.
