Mudslide in Ipoh affects 250

A massive ‘river’ of mud gushed through the town of Menglembu, Perak, early this morning, affecting some 250 residential and shoplots in Taman Kledang Permai and Taman Arkid.

The mudslide which occurred at about 2.30am has damaged roads, and pushed aside two cars along the main road leading to the Ipoh-Lumut Expressway.

Authorities have now blocked the road.

Heavy downpour in the past few days is believed to have caused the mudslide.

According to Menglembu state assemblyman Lim Pek Har, the origin of the mudslide was a development project nearby involving a college, condominium and shoplot.

“There are ponds inside the development area and the land collapsed following heavy rain. Sand and mud has come down the hill and the roads are seriously damaged with cracks,” Lim said.

There were no reported injuries.

She estimated the affected area to be about half a kilometre radius or more, with houses and shoplots flooded by water and mud.

It is learnt that the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department were at the scene to help while Ipoh City Council (MBI) officers have begun cleaning work, which is estimated to take at least a few days.

Lim has advised victims to lodge a police report and she would be contacting the developer as well MBI as the to seek for an explanation and compensation.

“MBI should do site visits tp the projects so that things like this won’t happen,” she said.
