No application from SYABAS, Selangor for water rationing - SPAN

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has yet to receive an application from Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SYABAS) or the Selangor government to implement water rationing.

SPAN chairman Datuk Ismail Kasim said in a statement today that any decision to implement water rationing will be made by SPAN after getting approval from the Selangor state government, once discussions with all water operators, including SYABAS.

The statement followed a SYABAS statement last week that it was ready to implement water rationing in several areas in Selangor, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur due to the hot and dry spell and declining water reserves.

Ismail said the reserve margin of treated water is currently low, between one and three per cent depending on the region, time and circumstances.

Some mitigation projects and the construction of the Langat 2 water treatment plant project and its distribution system have been implemented to improve the water supply capacity in these areas in the long term, he said.

In the meantime, Ismail said the scheduled water supply in Kota Tinggi and Johor Baharu in Johor will continue until Oct 15 due to a drop in water levels in the Sg Lebam Dam and Sg Layang Dam.

However, it will be suspended temporarily from Sept 23 to 25 for Eid al-Adha celebrations and continued after the period.
