Over 100 food products on shelves found to have expired - S'gor Health Dept

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Health Department (JKNS) detected 132 expired food products still kept on shelves at business premises during the Food Safety Operation carried out in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations from Jan 9 to 13.

Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Sha'ari Ngadiman said the operation by the state's Food Safety and Quality Division (BKKM) in collaboration with the district health office at 43 premises also detected 1,415 products with damaged packaging.

"All the food products worth RM6,872.68 have been ordered to be removed from the sales display shelves for confiscation under Section 4(1)(f) and disposal under Section 4(8), Food Act 1983.

"A total of five 32B notices, namely offences under Rule 11(1)(j) and Rule 14(9)(b) of the Food Regulations 1985 were issued during this operation," he said in a statement today.

In the meantime, Dr Sha'ari said a total of 33 samples of mandarin oranges had been sent to the Chemistry Department for pesticide analysis, adding that legal action would be taken if there were any violations.

"A supermarket was also ordered to shut down for 14 days under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983 as the premises was found to be unclean," he said.

Dr Sha'ari urged the public to remain vigilant of the safety status and quality of food sold and called on operators of supermarkets, mini markets and retail shops throughout Selangor to always ensure that the food products sold complied with all legal requirements.
