PDRM, AG's Dept in talks to tag offenders with EMD
The Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM) is in talks with the Attorney-General's (AG) Department to track the movements of certain offenders by tagging them with electric monitoring devices (EMD).
Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said at present only certain criminals were tagged under Chapter VI of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.
"The AG's office has welcomed our proposal and we're in discussions to expand the EMD to those convicted under the Prevention of Crime Act 1959," he said after the launch of the South Selangor Desa Selamat programme and Aidilfitri gathering in Cyberjaya, Saturday.
He said the police would fully utilise the existing law and technology available to fight serious crimes.
Meanwhile, Khalid was asked to comment on the allegations by MCA Youth Chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong that his house was being spied on with a remote control helicopter.
Khalid said a report had been lodged on the matter and it was under investigation.
Touching on the Desa Selamat programme, he said that the idea behind it was that the community and police should work together to eradicate crime.
"People should always be on the alert and notice anything suspicious in their environment," he said.
