Penang govt to raise allowance of local councillors
The Penang government has proposed to raise the allowance of all councillors of the local authorities, namely the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) and Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) for the coming term.
Penang DAP chairman and State Local Government, Traffic Management and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman, Chow Kon Yeow said the allowance increase was more than 100 per cent of the existing rate.
He said at the moment, the allowance received by each local councillor was RM700 per month and RM60 in incentive for attendance at each council meeting held.
"Earlier, the state government announced the salary increase for assemblymen while the salary for the state executive council (exco) members remains the same, and the state government proposes to raise the allowance of the exco members," he said during the winding-up session of the DAP Ordinary Convention which was attended by 689 delegates, here, Sunday.
Apart from that, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng announced an increase of RM200 to the monthly allowance of the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) chairmen and secretaries.
