Penang listed as top food destination by Lonely Planet
The largest travel guide book publisher in the world, Lonely Planet, has listed Penang as the top culinary hotspot in the world for 2014.
The island takes first place over other ‘foodie’ destinations such as Victoria in Australia, Lake District in United Kingdom, Puglia in Italy and Oaxaca in Mexico.
Lonely Planet editor, Robin Barton said Penang is known for its hawker food such as “Char Kway Teow”, “Mi Hokkien” and “Laksa”.
The eclectic variety of food that Malaysia has represents the mix of Malay, Indian, Chinese, Siam and Acheh influences that has evolved from early trade since 1786.
Lonely Planet also recognizes George Town as the epicenter of good food.
Barton also suggests that foodies should visit the Esplanade Food Centre through Lonely Planet as it will be able to give a better picture of Penang’s food and culture.
He also talks about “Air Bandung” and “Cendol” which he says is mandatory for anyone who visits the island and it can be bought from hawkers and in the night market.
Lonely Planet previously listed Malaysia as one of the top 10 destinations to visit in 2014.
