KUALA LUMPUR: Perlis UMNO has decided to sever ties with the Central leadership if they remain with the stand of ceasing cooperation with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) at the 2021 edition of the UMNO General Assembly, at the end of this month.

Perlis UMNO chairman Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said he was not worried if action was taken against Perlis UMNO under his leadership.

"If Perlis makes a decision, and they want to throw out Perlis, then just throw us out," said the Perlis Umno Liaison chairman who is also the chairman of the Perikatan Nasional Council of Members of Parliament in an interview program on current issues, Talk Now published by MalaysiaNow.

The UMNO General Assembly 2021 on March 27 will be held amid allegations of pressure from some of its leaders not to cooperate with Bersatu in the next general election.

Even UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak have lately increased criticisms of Bersatu while accusing the party led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin of sidelining UMNO in important government appointments.

In fact, the two leaders who were facing corruption charges, had urged PAS to follow in their footsteps to leave Bersatu.

Shahidan, who is also the Arau Member of Parliament, also questioned the UMNO leaders’ call for PAS to leave Bersatu whereas the Islamic party was already together in the Perikatan (PN) coalition.

“PAS is registered with PN. This means that if we want PAS, PAS must give a condition that we must be with Bersatu.

"If we want Bersatu (but) we don't want PAS, we can't ... because PAS is in PN," said the veteran politician.

“For us, let there be negotiations so that where BN, PN do not contest. Where PN contests, BN does not contest. We just want the negotiation,” he added.
