Speaking at the landmark forum, Anwar described a global shift in economic power, as traditional Western-led institutions retreat into isolationism and protectionism.
This transition, he said, creates an opportunity for Malaysia and ASEAN to lead the charge toward economic pluralism, moral governance, and multilateral cooperation.
“Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN comes at this opportune moment.
“As Asia becomes the center of the global economy, ASEAN is projected to become the fourth-largest economic bloc globally, driven by a burgeoning middle class and growing influence.” he added
Highlighting Malaysia’s economic progress since his government took office in late 2022, Anwar cited record-breaking achievements in foreign direct investments, particularly in renewable energy and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Anwar stressed the importance of striking a balance between economic growth and social equity.
“Encouraging market-led growth should not be seen as incompatible with advancing equity,” he said.
Malaysia’s economic vision for 2025 includes leveraging its strategic geographical position as a hub for electricity, talent, and supply chain diversification while cementing its leadership in key sectors like semiconductors, oil and gas, and Islamic finance.
The forum, a first for Malaysia, reflects the government’s commitment to fostering robust economic strategies and advancing its role as a leader in the region and beyond.
